If you want to hear the Staatskapelle Dresden at its best in Beethoven (and you should), then the set to get is Blomstedt’s on Berlin Classics or whatever other label it pops up on now and again. There’s no denying Davis’ seriousness or integrity, or the absolutely beautiful playing of the orchestra. The problem is simple: the results are stodgy, and ultimately somewhat dull. This is particularly the case with the most popular, odd-numbered works (starting with the “Eroica”). Excellent engineering doesn’t change the overall picture. If Davis had taken the allegros with just a bit more energy, this could have been great. Certainly it’s above average, perhaps a good bit above, but it just doesn’t set the pulse racing as great Beethoven
