Shostakovich brought home November 25, 2012
By James Kendall (Kentfield, CA) See All My Reviews
"On this disc, one can detect the duress of Shostakovich's experience under Stalin, in his Symphony #5. And the jollity within Symphony #9 informs us that Shostakovich survived. When Vasily Petrenko conducted locally, recently, I regretted my not attending. In that I prevail within the foreshortened parameters of a senior's budget, I can seldom secure access to an event; excepting the occasional winning of tickets from KDFC-FM, upon whom I utterly depend to enliven my life in, otherwise-stodgy, Marin County; whereat I also consult to make selections to purchase from ArkivMusic. This disc Brought the clarity of Vasily Petrenko and Dmitri Shostakovich into my home."

Thoughtful and joyful . . . April 15, 2012

" . . . is this music from a creative and sensitive composer. Performance is finely nuanced and sonorously defined, signifying orchestra's musical chops, and conductor's presence and decisions."
