Haydn's average is still better than most composers at their best, and so it is with these three little-known symphonies. No. 25 has an interesting first movement, half adagio/half allegro, but no formal slow movement at all. No. 42 is vintage "middle period", with one of Haydn's "poultry yard" main themes to start it off, while No. 65 sports a lively hunting finale with horns to the fore (they also feature prominently in the delicious trio of No. 25's minuet, with oboes and pizzicato strings). The performances here are all aptly vivacious, with lively rhythms and excellent ensemble. Oboes and horns distinguish themselves, though they are perhaps a touch backwardly balanced by the engineers. Patrick Gallois adds a totally unnecessary harpsichord continuo to No. 25 and interpolates a brief but tasteless cadenza between the first movement's two halves (why does anyone find this stylish?), but in all other respects this is a useful addition to Naxos' almost-complete Haydn symphony cycle. If you are looking for these particular works, don't hesitate.
