For a composer no one much cares about and whose music seldom appears on concert programs, William Alwyn has been extremely well treated by record labels (specifically Lyrita, Chandos, and Naxos). Perhaps it's because he was a very good composer who wrote lots of attractive, beautifully finished music that deserves to be cared about and to appear on concert programs. This disc is a case in point. It shows Alwyn's versatility as a tone poet (Pastoral Fantasia, Autumn Legend, Tragic Interlude), as a composer in stricter forms (Concerto Grosso, Overture to a Masque), and as an excellent producer of "light classics" (Scottish Dances).

The Five Preludes, a set of delicious miniatures, date from 1927 and constitute Alwyn's first orchestral work. They are already quite accomplished, and this is their world-premiere recording. As in his previous recordings of English music for Naxos, David Lloyd-Jones proves an excellent and always sympathetic interpreter, while the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic responds sensitively to his direction. Violist Philip Dukes and English hornist Rachael Pankhurst project their parts in Pastoral Fantasia (Dukes) and Autumn Legend (Pankhurst) expressively and with lovely tone. Fine sonics complete this wholly winning picture of a composer whose luck on discs, I'm sure you'll agree, is well deserved.
