Here is a smartly packaged and adroitly executed program from a pianist with a distinctive voice. Michal Tal is a Tel Aviv-based musician with a clean and honest technique that lets the music speak for itself. There is no mooning over pretty passages in the Schubert, no Schnabel-like Luftpausen for expressive effect; those inured to such a style might find Tal a tad cold. I found it refreshing, a good counterbalance to the proto-Romantic way of Schnabel and others. The important thing is that Schubert can handle a variety of approaches, and Tal’s playing even amplifies the brilliance of the music in a way that more self-absorbed playing does not. The pair of French composers here is affected by Tal’s modernist manner differently. Satie’s satire and overall cheekiness needs no exaggeration on the part of the interpreter, and although Tal obviously has fun with this music, she largely plays it straight, albeit with some swing in her tempo when the music calls for it. Of all of the music here, the Préludes of Debussy can use a bit of juicing, with color and pointed drama as is appropriate. Here again, Tal gives us music-making of precision and vivacity, all to the good here, but she is outclassed by any number of competitors, stretching back to Gieseking and through to Zimerman, who provide greater characterization. Tal has a special relationship with Luciano Berio, with whom she has performed. The precision and balance of her playing are extremely useful in bringing out the intricacies of his solo piano music.

These are live recordings, venue not cited. It sounds like a medium sized hall. I do wish the applause were edited out. It doesn’t really belong anywhere except at the very end (and I would be happy not to have it there, either) rather than interspersed in the program. It is not a spoiler for this refreshing recital, though.
