Notes and Editorial Reviews

An exquisite addition to a Koopman series that is growing in stature

A year after the 300th anniversary of Buxtehude’s death, and an attendant mass of recordings, comes one of the finest. Ton Koopman realises the richness and poetry in this music in performances that are at once probing, lively and extremely enjoyable.

In the course of my radio work, I recently aired a concert led by the quintessentially Baroque Ton Koopman. He was conducting the decidedly revisionist-instrument Cleveland Orchestra in two large-scale works—a suite culled from Telemann’s vast Tafelmusik collections, and a late Haydn symphony. All of Koopman’s virtues were writ large—tempos were bracingly energetic, textures were luminously transparent, and the sheer joy of music-making informed every moment. Throughout, the Cleveland Orchestra projected the overall sound and affect of his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, which is a testament both to its superb musicianship and to Koopman’s conductorial skill.

These virtues can be applied to Koopman’s ongoing foray into Buxtehude’s keyboard music. I favorably reviewed Volume 1 ( Fanfare 31:4), and Volume 2 ( Fanfare 31:5) of his performances of Buxtehude’s organ œuvre . Here he focuses on Buxtehude’s harpsichord music and similarly weaves his intoxicating magic, despite the fact that it is more harmonically static (designed to be realized in meantone as opposed to Andreas Werckmeister’s well-tempered tuning), suggesting that it was targeted toward the amateur market. Toward that end, the ubiquitous, but harmonically bound variations never wander very far from their underlying themes, depending instead upon ever changing surface figurations. This would seem to be a recipe for boredom, but Koopman’s lucid articulation and unfailingly guisto tempos, imbue these Sweelinckesque pieces with an infectious immediacy and charm.

Koopman’s scholarship is typically impeccable, but it is scholarship in the service of performances that communicate with my 21st-century ears. He variously plays three modern Willem Kroesbergen instruments—a Flemish harpsichord after A. Ruckers, a Flemish virginal modeled after those by that same instrument maker, and an Italian harpsichord after B. Stefanini. The sound is close up but timbrally varied enough to project characters of the three instruments. In the end, it belies Sir Thomas Beecham’s characterization of the harpsichord as sounding like “two skeletons copulating on a corrugated tin roof.”
