Notes and Editorial Reviews

The early works of Josef Suk channel something of the same life-affirming Czech spirit also characteristic of Dvorak, his teacher and father-in-law. Jonathan Plowright makes a persuasive case for a composer whose music is at last emerging from the shadows.

It sounds as if Jonathan Plowright has thoroughly enjoyed his foray into the world of the character piece. If collective titles along the lines of Summer Impressions or Spring might smack of Walter Carroll, let me reassure you now that this is music of great inventiveness, full of flights of imagination and no small degree of virtuosity. Plowright’s affection for this

– Gramophone

There are memories, some vivid some faded, of Brahms, Schumann, and Grieg, though Suk’s prowess as a pianist is very much to the fore. What is incontrovertible is the quality of Plowright’s skill and affection. He makes it impossible to imagine performances of greater warmth and stylistic assurance, crowned by Hyperion’s outstanding sound.

Wonderful recital of Suk's piano works August 22, 2018 By Gail M. (Goleta, CA) See All My Reviews "Josef Suk was a gifted composer in the late romantic tradition following directly on from Dvorak. Many of Suk's melodies are strikingly beautiful. Here Jonathan Plowright performs four sets of Suk's finest piano works. His playing perfectly realizes the romantic moods of these pieces, on a piano with sound appropriate for this music. The recording is excellent. This is an unusually enjoyable disk from a composer whose works are seldom recorded or performed in concerts." Report Abuse
