CLEMENS NON PAPA Missa pro defunctis. Tristitia et anxietas. Vae tibi Babylon et Syria. Erravi sicut ovis à 5. De profundis. Vox in Rama. Peccantem me quotidie. Heu mihi Domine Stephen Rice, dir; Brabant Ens HYPERION CDA 67848 (72:52 Text and Translation)

Stephen Rice has returned to the composer who marked this group’s debut ( Fanfare 29:1), which got a review that predicted the high level of his subsequent releases. Read more Jacobus Clemens non Papa (1510–56) was a Flemish composer who, unlike so many of his contemporaries, never visited Italy. Like Thomas Crecquillon, he was prolific and popular in his time but neglected since then. A conference in Utrecht in 2003 resulted in a collection of essays on both composers, Beyond Contemporary Fame (Brepols, 2006), including a fresh biography of Clemens non Papa and a contribution by Rice. He detects in Clemens’s music a special character of the centrality of melody rather than counterpoint and the use of harmony for effect.

Most of the works on this disc are new to records, only Peccantem me quotidie being found on Edith Ho’s recent record (30: 5) and the Requiem on an earlier Maarten Michielsen disc (18:5). Vae tibi Babylon et Syria is set to a text from the Second Book of Esdras, an unusual choice that may have appealed to the composer for the opportunity the word-setting offered him. The penitential motets make a suitable complement in mood to the Mass for the Dead. Rice’s group continues to deliver splendid performances of mid 16th-century repertoire in programs neatly constructed for each disc. Highly recommended.
