Notes and Editorial Reviews

This first volume in a projected series of the complete Haydn piano trios promises many future delights. The performances are, by and large, excellent. The G major trio contains the famous Gypsy rondo finale, and it's very fetchingly played, with all of the exotic bits nicely touched in but never vulgarized. The skittish finale of the C major trio is also deliciously light and vivacious. All of this music is vintage late Haydn of his London period--simply masterful.

My only quibble concerns the finale of the F-sharp minor trio. After a wonderfully expansive account of the gorgeous slow movement (which it shares with Symphony No. 102), the gaunt concluding minuet comes across as just a hair too perky, its barely suppressed
Read more melancholy a bit too casually marked. The final crescendo also could be considerably more shocking. But it's hard to criticize any Haydn performance for an excess of high spirits, and kudos particularly are in order for pianist Susan Tomes. These are keyboard works first and foremost, and she leads with great sensitivity and elegance. The sound is excellent, save that a touch more prominence might have been given the cello. I look forward to Volume 2.
