Notes and Editorial Reviews

"The title of the latest disc from Gothic Voices speaks of the ways in which the discourses of love (and 'love') in the late Middle Ages are partly, perhaps largely, derived from books—the Bible, classical poetry and myths, the earlier medieval literary tradition—rather than some expression of unmediated personal feeling. This is a crucial element in our understanding of the poetry, and hence the vernacular song, of fourteenth-century France, and relates closely to the subject of much present-day writing on the construction of gender and human relationship through language. There is probably a book to be written here, and Christopher Page may be the man to write it. But meanwhile we have this wonderful music, one powerful means for the Read more late medieval artist to attempt to transcend the bookish intertextualities of the literary texts.

I have rarely heard Gothic Voices, both as individuals and together, sounding more alive and present. The accord of vowel colour between the singers in some of the fully texted pieces (for example, at the very opening of the disc) is marvellous, a feature pointed up the more by juxtaposition with those works in which Page continues his experiments with lower-voice vocalization. Where some slight untidiness creeps in, the impression often (though not invariably) given is the positive one of risk being happily taken in the recording sessions, the very absence of which has so often been the downfall of lesser groups (and not just in medieval music)...

The disc overall is a wonderful addition to the catalogue, and the recorded sound...is superlative."
