A. GABRIELI Missa Pater peccavi: Kyrie. De profundis clamavi. O sacrum convivium. Ancor che co’l partire. Ricercari (5) Timothy Roberts (org), dir; His Majestys Consort of Voices; His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts HELIOS 55265 (73:05 & )

This is a straight reissue of Hyperion 67167, originally reviewed by both Martin Anderson and J. F. Weber in Read more Fanfare 24:3. Like all this company’s midprice Helios CDs, the original notes, texts, and translations have been retained: would that some others would follow suit.

As both my colleagues noted, Andrea Gabrieli has been overshadowed by the achievements of his nephew Giovanni, yet his importance in musical history is considerable, and he was a sufficiently accomplished and versatile composer for Lassus to tempt him to join the capella of Maximilian II in Munich. Ultimately he remained in his native Venice, becoming permanent organist of St. Mark’s in 1566.

Among a substantial number of sacred works composed for the basilica are six masses, of which four for six voices, including the Missa Pater peccavi , were published in 1672. As the title suggests, this is a “parody” Mass, based on Gabrieli’s own five-part motet, Pater peccavi in caelum . It is a transitional work, fundamentally composed in polyphonic style, but also including homophonic passages that point forward to the Venetian polychoral style. In keeping with contemporary practice, the six “choirs” here include both vocalists (one to a part) and instrumentalists, and although it is not a liturgical reconstruction, the movements of the Mass are sandwiched between opening and closing motets, and interspersed by brass or organ instrumental works. The foundation of the performance of the Mass is based on the colla parte principal, with two cornetts and four sackbuts doubling the voices, although director Timothy Roberts introduces tonal variety by dropping the instruments in more introverted sections, such as “Qui tollis” (Gloria) and the central part of Credo (“Et incarnatus,” “Crucifixus,” and, more surprisingly, “Et resurrexit”), where Gabrieli himself reduces the number of parts to three. Further performance possibilities are explored in the two motets, with the grave five-part De profundis clamavi being dispersed between two vocalists and three instruments, and the exquisite four-part O sacrum convivium , most convincingly allotted to soprano and four sackbuts.

Both as to conception and execution, the performances are of very high quality indeed, with both singers and instrumentalists working together to achieve a finely balanced ensemble, not easy to achieve in this music. This was and remains an important recording that reveals Andrea Gabrieli as far more than a musical John the Baptist awaiting the arrival of his greater nephew. Any early music enthusiast who missed it first time round should certainly snap it up.
