Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is singing of the highest order, artistry so polished that it's not surprising to discover that Matthias Goerne's teachers include Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. His voice resembles the latter, though it is more even from top to bottom, with a very well-focused lower end and a top range that can be lyrically sweet or demanding, depending on the lyric. In sum, Goerne's art is the closest thing to perfect singing that I have heard in a decade. Goerne and Roger Norrington adopt tempos that are slightly faster than usual in the more rapid movements of these works, but they succeed since the approach is light, not frantic. The orchestra plays with precision and a sure sense of

phrasing. The recording is properly balanced and clear as can be, with a particularly delightful organ sound in the opening Sinfonia of Cantata No. 35.

Bach solo cantatas for bass April 13, 2012
By W. Roberts (ALEXANDRIA, VA) See All My Reviews
"Mattias Goerne sings the two Bach solo cantatas for bass, plus arias from other Bach works. Having sung and taught these works, I can attest to the demands they place on a performer. The extended range, long melismas and unexpected intervals require great care and precision, and Goerne delivers magnificently. So technically secure is he that he dives straight into the drama of these works, exactly what is needed. All Bach lovers will want this CD.
