| Music for Pipe Organ by Alberta composers. Organist James Pickens was born and brought up in Calgary, but has since lived in many places. He holds associate and licentiate diplomas from the Western Board of Music (piano), associate diplomas form the Royal Conservatory of Toronto (organ and piano), and degrees from the University of Victoria (theology). His teachers have included Peter Turner, robin Wood, Robert Bell and Neil Cockburn. He combines work as an organist and choir director (Knox Presbyterian Church, Calgary) with that of piano teacher, and accompanist (Calgary Men's Chorus). Picken's solo composition on this recording is 'Moving On' (2004). The restlessness of this piece and its eventual sense of dawning represent a hopeful attitude to change along life's journey (Disc 1, track 1). 'Of the wealth of organ music written by Albertans, these discs necessarily represent only a selection. I offer these pieces as a tribute to our Alberta musical heritage.' - James Picken | |||||
