Notes and Editorial Reviews

Rodrigo’s music for solo guitar is not extensive but represents an important pillar of the repertoire, ranging from vignettes to sonatas over a six-decade period. The 1933 Toccata was rediscovered in 2005 and has since provided an ambitiously virtuosic vehicle for today’s guitarists. Rodrigo flecked his works with elements of fantasy, flamenco and bird song while Un tiempo fue Itálica famosa, one of his very greatest works in the genre, is superbly impassioned. The tender Pastoral, originally for piano, is here transcribed for guitar by Jérémy Jouve whose first volume in this series (8.570286) received a three-star review (“The young French guitarist plays brilliantly”) in the Penguin Guide.  Exquisite Performance January 11, 2017 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "In this outstanding disk, French guitarist Jeremy Jouve displays supreme technical virtuosity and deep affinity for and understanding of the solo guitar compositions of Joaquin Rodrigo. This is the second Naxos disk dedicated to Rodrigo in this manner. Vol. 1 (Naxos 8.570286) featured Jouve and Judicael Perroy performing together in a recital to which I gave a strong 5 star rating in a previous commentary for Arkivmusic. That same standard of artistic excellence completely pervades this Naxos recording from 2013. One might be tempted to assume that the guitar can only express itself from a constricted technical foundation; after all, how diverse a sound world can emerge from only 6 strings? Well, anyone inclined to such ideas will quickly recognize this fallacy after hearing Jouve's scintillating performance, which brings forth the excitement, extroverted bombast, introspection, pathos, colorations, rhythms, etc., which Spanish guitar music offers in spades. This is an extremely high quality recording, and I submit that you don't have to be a guitar guru to thoroughly enjoy this music. Highly recommended." Report Abuse
