Notes and Editorial Reviews

This 55-CD set chronicles the remarkable Archiv label, begun in 1947. Devoted mainly to early and Baroque music, the recordings presented here, in facsimiles of their original sleeves (a nice touch), cover the period from Gregorian chant to Beethoven’s Fifth and Sixth symphonies, played on period instruments. There are stops in between for a great deal of Bach, music of the Gothic era, the French Baroque (Mouret, Delalande, Rameau, etc), Gibbons, Handel (Alcina, La Resurrezione, Messiah, Italian cantatas), Telemann, Zelenka, Gabrieli, Desprez, Haydn, LeJeune, and plenty of the usual, as well as unusual, suspects. There’s also a final CD with selections of new releases (more Handel, Cavalli, Gesualdo, Vivaldi).

Revisiting many
Read more of these, or hearing some for the first time, is an interesting exercise: Fischer-Dieskau’s 1950 and ’51 recordings of Bach’s cantatas Nos. 4, 56, and 82, though now sounding somewhat lugubrious, are so gorgeously sung that all we’ve learned about performance practice ceases to matter; Ralph Kirkpatrick’s Scarlatti sonatas from 1965 and ’70 are still ideal (first sound clip). On the other hand, the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis performance of the Brandenburgs under August Wenzinger (here available on CD for the first time) are just dreadful—poorly played and simply bizarre (second sound clip). But how wonderful to hear Trevor Pinnock’s Goldberg Variations again, and John Eliot Gardiner’s fine recording of the Monteverdi Vespers!

Alcina boasts the spectacular Joyce DiDonato, Maite Beaumont, and Karina Gauvin, with Alan Curtis at his best; Gardiner’s Beethoven Fifth is exciting and energetic, and while certainly HIP, is not whitewashed of emotion. Mark Minkowski’s Une Symphonie Imaginaire, made up of pieces by Rameau, is a fantastic pastiche; Pinnock’s Haydn symphonies Nos. 39, 41, 48, and 65 are intense and dance-y. Malcolm Bilson’s Mozart concertos under Gardiner remain the best of the fortepiano versions. And there’s tons more—70-plus hours of listening. The compact box comes with an almost 200-page booklet giving dates of recording, precise track listings and timings for each selection, interesting essays, some handsome photos, and a separate slipcase for each CD, easy to manage. It’s a treasure.

--------------------

In more ways than one, 2013 is an Archiv Produktion year. The beloved Silver Label - the "Early Music Studio of Deutsche Grammophon", as it was called for many years - is being revived in a big way, both in frontline and catalogue. This boxed set traces the history of Archiv from 1947, when the first recordings were made (Helmut Walcha playing Bach organ works), to a "bonus" CD featuring selections from the new 2013 albums mentioned above.

A complete overview is appended. In between comes a sequence of albums several of which are new to CD from the great names of the label, from Walcha, Wenzinger and Safford Cape, through Karl Richter, Nikolas Harnoncourt, and Sir Charles Mackerras, on to David Munrow, Ralph Kirkpatrick, Jurgen Jurgens, to Reinhard Goebel, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Trevor Pinnock, Paul McCreesh, Marc Minkowski, Anne Sofie von Otter, Magdalena Kozena, and many, many more. The list of artists who have recorded for Archiv is truly astounding.

And the music they recorded represents some of the best, both in terms of repertoire and listening experience, that there has ever been, all the way from Gregorian Chant to Beethoven. This set includes some rediscoveries, such as Harnoncourt's Muffat and Biber, and new musical experiences like the Brandenburg Concertos with August Wenzinger.

The box is as simple and as striking as it could be: in gleaming silver with the large blue Archiv logo embossed on all sides. A large onsert on the top and back of the box details contents and is illustrated with a packshot showing contents. This is an original-cover box, starting with the austere yellow covers of the 1940s and 1950s gradually giving way to the great historical illustrations and images that featured up to the 1990s, when artists at last began to make an appearance (there were no artist photos in the 1950s!)

The 180-page full-color book in an arresting oblong format has articles by journalist Nicholas Anderson and "memoirs" by former directors of Archiv Prof. Andrewas Holschneider and Dr. Peter Czornyj, and Executive Producer Marita Prohmann. The book features many rare photos from Archiv recording sessions as well as other memorabilia.

Working my way through this historic set August 8, 2013 By M. Tyler (Lincoln, NE) See All My Reviews "As of now, I am eleven disks into the 55. Of course I have heard many of the Bach works before, but I never had ability to control when I could listen to the St. Matthew Passion. I came to "early music" in the 1970's when there were starting to be more recordings with historic instruments than with the later ones used in the first recordings in this set, so the sound of the Adam de la Halle works and Renaisance era dances was a surprising combination. But I had never heard Le Jeu de Robin et de Marion before. I am particularly glad to have found the Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau performance in the cantata on CD 2. I will not be rushing; so far I am enjoying these a great deal." Report Abuse
Boredom begone! July 28, 2013 By Phil H. (San Antonio, TX) See All My Reviews "I seriously anyone will be bored by the range of recordings selected from the Arkiv productions. Sure, there are some titles I would not have included had I had the responsibility of choosing, but there are hardly any selections not worth listening to. The majority of selections are taken from important but lesser known composers, and all are cleanly recorded or remastered in keeping with Arkiv's high production standards. There may be a tad too much Bach (11 of the 55 CDs) but as these are often reference recordings, one can't complain too much. One small quibble: I would have liked a CD with texts and liner notes included. Overall, the wealth of material in this highly desirable set will provide hours of pleasurable listening. Strongly recommended." Report Abuse
