Notes and Editorial Reviews

This documentary by Andy King-Dabbs won the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik (German Record Critics' Award). It tells the story of one of the greatest and most controversial conductors of the 20th century. The Hungarian-born Georg Solti had huge drive, energy, and ambition. It shows how Solti took music-making in opera houses and orchestras to new levels, how he harnessed recording, and later television, to reach out to new audiences, and how he nurtured remarkable new talent through a successful, if not always endearing, combination of technique, charm, and genius. The film includes remarkably candid interviews which Solti gave just before his death, in which he talked with great honesty about his life, his challenges, and his Read more achievements. It also includes new interviews with artists and musicians who worked closely with him. Read less

Lots of historical stories September 23, 2013 By Paul Burgess (Wheaton, IL) See All My Reviews "I'm glad that I got this video. I certainly learned a lot about the life of Solti. Since I have lived in the Chicago area for quite some time, his presence as a living legend continues. My difficulty, though, was that understanding what Solti personally said was often difficult. I continue to be impressed that he is able to speak in multiple languages (unfortunately, I don't!), but his accent, for me, gets in the way. I would liked to have had an option to get English subtitles/captions so that I could better understand him. Might this kind of thing be available in the future?" Report Abuse
Solti by the BBC August 14, 2013 By Mark Dykstra (South Holland, IL) See All My Reviews "This is a fascinating, solid, 57 minutes covering Solti's entire life. It's got music, interviews with Solti (some with subtitles, though almost all of his English is very good), and interviews with musicians that he worked with. The views of the musicians are varied; this is no hagiography. There's a satisfying amount of archival footage from the Continent, London, and Chicago in the 1960's. The BBC did a great job with this complete overview." Report Abuse
An interesting look at a great musician March 29, 2013 By Sour Persimmons See All My Reviews "Solti’s life and work are the subject of this rather misleadingly-titled BBC documentary; while a few members of the London Philharmonic express frustration at Solti’s lack of stick technique and/or being made to play “like Americans” instead of their British selves, throughout the film Solti himself emerges as an admirable, fascinating, and charismatic talent—and nothing like Mephisto. Frankly, it’s hard to find fault with someone so genuinely driven by a passion for music and excellence in its performance. The film features a number of interviews, including many with the maestro himself filmed over a thirty year period up until just before his death. Copious amounts of behind-the-scenes and performance footage give the viewer a fly-on-the-wall perspective of Solti’s life, both on and off the podium. Although it runs only an hour, this well-structured film is highly recommended for classical music and opera lovers." Report Abuse
