Notes and Editorial Reviews

Award: Diapason d'Or/Choc du Monde de la Musique, France

"...a superb account of Strauss's masterpiece, earns the strongest recommendation for the virtuosity and eloquence of the performance and the remarkably vivid recording..." - Gramophone

One of the great musicians of the twentieth century is heard here in two staples of the cello repertoire: Strauss's masterpiece Don Quixote and Schumann's beautifully lyrical Concerto.

The performances, recorded in Berlin in 1975 and in Paris in 1976, feature the most sympathetic and virtuosic accompaniments from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Karajan, and from Leonard Bernstein and the French National Orchestra.

Sweet & Sour Mstislav September 19, 2014 By owen ryan (lakewood, CA) See All My Reviews "I bought this CD primarily for the Cello Concerto but I should have done my homework first. Penguin Guide: ''sounds disappointingy self-concious. [Rostropovich] is at his most indulgent.'' Not as labeled one of the Great Recordings of the Century. Don Quixote according to Gramophone is ''superb...earns the strongest recommendation for the virtuosity and eloquence of the performance and the remarkably vivid recording.'' Since I already have the wonderful Reiner/CSO account and Karajan/BPO's very good 1976 recording, I'll probably not keep this EMI issue." Report Abuse
