There are things in this performance, wonderful things, that you won't hear anywhere else. Marek Janowski's previous Bruckner recordings with this orchestra for PentaTone have been fair-to-good at best. This one is different. Its special touches include the most ferocious attack on the opening of the finale yet recorded; a scherzo that gives remarkable prominence to the woodwinds at the climax of each section without artificially dampening the brass; and best of all, a surge of ecstasy in the form of an effortlessly natural accelerando into those serene harp and string

Indeed, Janowski's control of tempo throughout this performance is remarkable; the coda of the finale, beginning very slowly then exploding in a blaze of light, offers another example. The tempo in the first movement is swifter than usual, but not rushed, and very exciting. In the finale Janowski's mastery of transition prevents the recapitulation in Nowak's edition from sounding merely like the "exposition's greatest hits". Exemplary ensemble balances make every strand in the texture audible, while the engineering couldn't be more natural. This is without question one of the great performances.

Very good Bruckner 8th July 23, 2013 By Gail M. (Goleta, CA) See All My Reviews "This disk has the same excellent sound as the others in Janowski's current Bruckner series. It is very enjoyable; I would rate the performance as nearly the best I've ever heard. But I feel that it lacks a little drama. For example, the last movement seems a bit longer than usual, although it does not drag. This is finer than all but a few of the many available recordings, so I would not hesitate to recommend it."
