Notes and Editorial Reviews

About Mackerras’s new version of the much-recorded Fifth little needs to be said except: ‘Magnificent!’ That applies too to the technical recording, with sound gradations embracing a pianissimo which makes you hold your breath. Like Muti with the Philadelphia Orchestra (EMI, 1993), Mackerras fills out the disc with the Festive Overture, the RPO’s prodigious woodwind skills enabling him to take it even faster than Muti did.

Performance: 5 (out of 5), Sound: 5 (out of 5)

Wonderful Recording!! September 6, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "I suppose we will never really know for sure exactly what Dmitry Shostakovich had in mind when he composed his mighty 5th Symphony. The story of the 5th is pretty well known; on the verge of being swept under by Stalin's ruthless enforcement of Socialist Realism, Shostakovich essentially resurrected his career with the premiere of this astonishing symphony. On this superb recording with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Sir Charles Mackerras, the listener can easily see why this powerful yet enigmatic work successfully passed muster with the Soviet 'cultural police'. The rest, as they say, is history. The RPO is in top form here, and the sound is crystal clear, with wide dynamic range, and obvious attention to detail by Sir Charles Mackerras. Further, to get the listener's blood flowing in anticipation of the symphony's great musical excursion, the disk opens with a robust, explosive performance of Shostakovich Festival Overture, something that might well shake your walls if you have the volume turned up too high. I can heartily recommend this lustrous recording to anyone who wants to sample Shostakovich at his sharpest, when his career and even his life were on the line. Great stuff!!" Report Abuse
