Notes and Editorial Reviews

The original 91'40" duration of the LPs is here reduced to 65'45" by omitting many of the Renaissance items. Even 13 years later, when interest in such things has slightly declined, one may welcome a cavalcade of short pieces (the longest is 4'18") when the programme is so imaginatively constructed (rightly praised by DA in his original reviews) and the performances are by players who were no longer struggling to master early instruments—Konrad Ragossnig plays the lute but the booklet shows him holding a guitar! The (predigital) LP sound was first rate; that of the CD is even better.

Well, how do
Read more Early Baroque dances differ from the Renaissance dances to which so many discs have been devoted in this last year or two? The short answer is, not much. These labels "baroque" and "renaissance" are vague enough in all conscience, and the periods to which we commonly apply them overlap to a considerable extent. But before I complain about the over-exposure of this kind of music, a look at the repertoire of this anthology is in order: lo and behold, there are differences. If there are still lots of short dances in pavan and galliard rhythms, at least there are a couple of more extended works which might almost be called "ballets". For the dancing master, Mario Fabrizio Caroso provides a "ballet in praise of the Duchess of Modena" and yet another for the Duke and Duchess of Parma. Proceeding further, there are actually some great musicians composing the other dances: Dowland, Gesualdo and Gibbons. So this record is likely to contain some more interesting stuff than usual.

So it proves. The music is on the whole more sophisticated, more courtly, and possesses interest for the listener as well as the dancer. And it has a welcome variety of mood, Holborne's pavan The Funerals providing relief from constant gaiety, while Gesualdo's chromatic Galliard has some harmonic quirks that are far from the primeval chords which infect much dance music of the sixteenth century. The performances emphasise this sophistication. There is a more than adequate variety of colour, with the usual viol, recorder and crumhorn consort, plus a group of plucked strings (lutes, cittern and orpharion); yet there is little of that over-vividness which has become fashionable of late. The playing is excellent. The viols have a richer sound than in some consorts and may be criticised for being played in a rather romantic style-but not by me, for I like it. The recorders are especially engaging, but best of all are the lutenists. The solo music is played by Konrad Ragossnig most attractively; and when two lutes and theorbo come together in Molinaro's dance Il Conte Orlando, they have a quite fascinating sound.

The recording is equally efficient, preserving a suitable air of resonance, while not losing intimacy. The packaging is worthy of the venture, with an adequate sleevenote and a couple of reproductions of engravings which in their own way can tell us quite a lot about the ambience of this kind of music. A thoroughly worthwhile disc.
