Notes and Editorial Reviews

R E V I E W S:

Quasthoff does Haydn’s neglected operatic music proud in a fine recital

If his voice is perhaps just starting to show signs of edging past its prime, there’s still plenty of richness in Thomas Quasthoff’s bass baritone to savour here. And oodles of character, as he clearly delights in exploring a largely unfamiliar gallery of operatic roles. A most enjoyable addition to Haydn year by a major singer.

This is a unique treat, not only for Haydn lovers but also for opera lovers in general. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau recorded four Haydn arias (none of these) in 1969, but there has never before been such a selection of Haydn baritone and bass arias as we find here. These operas range from farce to idyll to opera seria to tragedy, and they cover a wide spectrum of dramatic and vocal character. Some of the roles are traditional basso buffo, but noble and serious ones are included. Quasthoff’s potent yet mellifluous bass-baritone is just right for most of them, and he is in superb voice. The bass in L’isola disabitata is the young lover, and Chi nel cammin d’onore is a touch low for Quasthoff. I saw that opera last night (a once-in-a-lifetime event); a young bass named Tom Corbeil sounded fresher, but he could not approach Quastoff’s artistry. The latter embellishes his line with taste and imagination, exhibiting coloratura we expect only from sopranos.

There is much more here than an amazing display of vocal virtuosity. While Haydn’s operas lack the human dimensions of Mozart’s, the elder composer’s music is every bit as wonderful. There are 16 marvelous arias from nine Haydn operas here, plus two written for insertion into operas by Bianchi and Salieri. Quasthoff invests each one with personality and character. The duet from Il mondo della Luna is charming, as the aged master tries to seduce his chambermaid, who feigns innocence. The period-instrument accompaniments are worthy of the singing, and the recorded sound is ideal, focusing on the voice without ever shortchanging the ensemble. I compared several arias with those in complete-opera recordings; Quasthoff’s is always the more vital, more engaging rendition.

No superlatives can do justice to this recital. My Want List 2009 is now filled, and it is all Haydn. Everyone should acquire this disc.
