This disc has more of the unusual than you expect -- who would have suspected Handel of writing such blissfully happy fugues as those in Alcina and Parlenope, and the Musette in the former has a most individual magic.
This is a record to dip into, though if you do listen to these overtures on the trot as your critic has just done, you will be surprised by their variety. Who would have suspected Handel of writing such blissfully happy fugues as those in Alcina and Parlenope, and the well-known Musette in the former has a most individual magic, magic being the subject of this opera. You may know the Gavotte in the Ottone Overture, but not the one in Lotario which is just as charming. And then for greater variety there isRead more the overture in Esther which is not of the French variety, being derived from a Trio Sonata (Op. 2 No. 3). This allows for an unusually cheerful first movement. But then the whole disc has more of the unusual than you expect. The strings may sound more in numbers than we count on today in such music, but I am not complaining. The playing is delightfully buoyant throughout and consistently compelling. As the quality is good, the disc can be confidently recommended.
