Notes and Editorial Reviews

A disc of Purcell overtures was a good idea; the music is consistently interesting. Not all the items are overtures in the modern sense; those from The Fairy Queen and The Indian Queen come from Act 4 of these operas, much of the latter being a trumpet solo. What the sleeve calls the "2nd Music" from King Arthur must surely have been intended as a conventional overture and is given as such in the Novello vocal score; the manuscript of this opera is lost, and the placing of some items is a matter of guesswork. Like other composers of his day Purcell had little notion of suiting his overtures to what followed; who would have guessed that the marvellously grave opening to the one for The Old Bachelor heralded a comedy (by Con greve), Read more yet what a sublime start for an evening in the theatre!

"Editions by Ronald Thomas" says the sleeve, and though most will accept repeats on single strings a few eyebrows will be raised at the woodwind alone being allowed a repeat in The Married Beau and the second episode in the Abdelazer hornpipe (the 'Britten' theme). For my taste there are sometimes too many dynamics (including unstylish crescendos), for instance in the Dido and Aeneas Overture, of which the first section is much too slow. The playing is at its lively best in the Timon of Athens and Rival Sisters Overtures, which I may have enjoyed the more for not knowing them already. But most of the music is enjoyable, not only the vigorous trumpet-and-drum items but also the soul-searing chromatic Adagios, as at the end of Bonduca.
