Notes and Editorial Reviews

Does a masterpiece ever yield all of its secrets? I suspect not, though there are times, I suppose, when appreciation counts more than discovery. A quarter-century ago, in anticipation of the great tri-centennial, the music of Bach and Handel was under intense scrutiny, and with so-called “authentic” instruments emerging as the medium of choice, discovery was the name of the game. “Revelatory” recordings seemed to pop up at every turn. Nowadays, with many of those revelations fixed firmly in place, a new recording may only need an expert and elegant performance to deserve consideration. Ross Pople’s new version comfortably fills that bill. The score has been organized into what have become the three standard suites, and Pople leads a Read more performance that is mindful of the current sensibilities—direct and energetic, but not without tenderness when necessary. His modern-instruments ensemble responds admirably. Arte Nova’s recording is first-rate, and its super-budget price can only enhance this disc’s genuine appeal.
