Notes and Editorial Reviews

This collection of 3 Blu-rays includes the following:

Puccini: Tosca / Boemi, Dessi, Armmiliato, Sgura
This production of Tosca filmed at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, with its stage set based on Adolf Hohenstein’s original design for the work’s premiere, brings together the best contemporary soprano-tenor combination Daniela Dessi and Fabio Armiliato – are set against a worthy opponent in the form of Claudio Sgura as Baron Scarpia. Such a combination of gentleman and scoundrel in one person is a perfect candidate to make “all Rome tremble before him.” Tosca is a classic example of Puccini’s three-person dramatic structure – a tragic pair of lovers juxtaposed with an
Read more interfering baritone! But these traditional roles are portrayed here in a much more realistic and psycho- logically accurate manner than usual. In vocal and dramatic terms however, the main attraction remains the title figure – and the reason why the work, became the archetypal prima donna opera.

Puccini: La Boheme / Harth-bedoya, Boe, Moore, Wood, Alattar
Jonathan Miller's 2009 La Bohème for the English National Opera reunites him with the designer Isabella Bywater, with sets based on documentary photography of 1930s Paris by Brassai and Kertész. Miller has a reputation for updating operas: his 1982 Mafiosi-style Rigoletto for the ENO, set in 1950s New York, transposed a scene to an all-night diner taken straight from Edward Hopper.

Puccini: Manon Lescaut / Gardiner, Nitescu, Denniston
Manon Lescaut, Giacomo Puccini's first major success, is a work of impassioned emotions based on the 18th-century novel by Abbé Prévost, depicting the doomed infatuation of Chevalier des Grieux for beautiful, fun-loving Manon. Puccini clothes the story in warmly passionate music that makes a direct appeal to the listener's emotions. Featuring Patrick Denniston, Adina Nitescu, Roberto De Candia and more.
