Notes and Editorial Reviews

SCHUBERT String Quintet in C, D 956 Quatuor Diotima; Anne Gastinel (vc) NAÏVE 5331 (57:00)

Presumably named after the female figure who advises Socrates on the identity of truth and beauty in The Symposium , the Diotima Quartet has specialized in recent music. Anne Gastinel, on the other hand, has made celebrated recordings of the Bach Cello Suites and of other standards in the cello repertoire. They unite here to make a Read more marvelous Schubert recording, one whose warmth, zest, lack of affectation, and interpretive depth make it a joy from the mysterious swellings of the opening bars to the pert rhythms of the Finale. There is not an eccentric moment here; nor is there a dull moment in this long chamber work, whose first movement (with repeats) runs to around 20 minutes. The playing is substantial and yet elegant, and the recorded sound is excellent: One hears or feels the cello centered, but perhaps a few feet behind the first violin. I’ve long listened to the quintet with Pablo Casals and Paul Tortelier (Anne Gastinel’s teacher) that is on Sony Classical, and the recording with Rostropovich and the Melos Quartet. I think this recording belongs beside those. It is an instant favorite.

Very well played Schubert Quintet January 4, 2015 By Gail M. (Goleta, CA) See All My Reviews "Musicians of the Quator Diotima with cellsit Anne Gastinel perform Schubert's C major Quintet in a technically excellent performance here. The sound of each instrument is very beautiful and vividly captured in this excellent recording. The balance and coordiantion of the playing is above criticism, and tempo choices are fine. But I feel that this perfomance does not project the remarkable emotional message of this music quite as strongly as a few of the very best ones." Report Abuse
